Johnstone Town Hall

Hard to think that this is the same picture. Where do you begin, the square has changed, and what a change it is, it's a great place to sit and reflect (take a look but use your back button to come back). The fountain was erected by an anonymous donor through agents, Messers. William Jeffery and Sons. The fountain is made entirely of Aberdeen Granite and was inaugurated in November 1886. The Provost of the time, John Love, drank to the success of the fountain. The water had been supplied by the Paisley Water Commissioners free of charge.

The foundation stone for the town hall was laid on the 14th September 1867 by Colonel Campbell of Blythswood, More than half the cost of the town hall was met by donations from every section of the community (what would be the chances today), they raised the sum of £1,669. The contributors to the town hall read like the who's who of Johnstone, George L Houston, Messers Finlayson, Bousfield and Company, Captain Loudon, Mr C.H. Bousfield, Messers Brown Malloch and Co., Mr Thomas Coats, Sir Michael Shaw-Stewart and Mr Andrew Coats.
The building to accomodate 600 people and had a games room, library and reading room.
